5 Signs Your Child May Need Psychiatric Help

If you are a parent, you know that raising children can be challenging. It’s normal for kids to have ups and downs, but sometimes these struggles can be too much for them – or for you – to handle on your own. If you are concerned about your child’s mental health, it may be time to seek psychiatric help. Liberty Psychiatrist Dr. Willis provides psychiatric services for child and adolescent/teen patients (up to age 18). He will work with you and your child to find the best treatment plan possible.

Here are five signs that your child may need psychiatric help:

Your child has experienced a significant change in mood or behavior.

If your child is usually happy and outgoing but suddenly becomes withdrawn and depressed, this could be a sign that something is wrong. Similarly, if your child starts exhibiting sudden outbursts of anger or aggression, this could also be cause for concern. If you notice any changes in your child’s mood or behavior that are out of the ordinary, it’s important to talk to their doctor.

Your child is having difficulty at school.

If your child is struggling with their grades or getting into trouble at school, this could be a sign that they need psychiatric help. It’s important to meet with their teacher to discuss your concerns and see if there is anything that can be done to help your child succeed in school.

Your child is having difficulty socializing with friends or family.

If your child is withdrawing from their friends or acting out towards family members, this could be a sign of an underlying mental health issue. If you are concerned about your child’s social interactions, it’s important to talk to their doctor.

Your child is exhibiting self-destructive behaviors.

If your child is engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviors, such as cutting themselves, using drugs or alcohol, or engaging in unsafe sex, this is a major red flag that they need psychiatric help. These behaviors can cause serious harm – both physically and emotionally – and it’s important to get your child help as soon as possible.

Your child is having difficulty coping with a major life event.

If your child is struggling to cope with a divorce, the death of a loved one, or another major life event, this can be extremely difficult for them to handle on their own. If you are concerned about your child’s ability to cope with a major life event, it’s important to seek professional help.
